This reminds me so much of when my grandma would host Sunday dinners at her house, which were always the highlight of my week. There were toys for the little ones and a yard to play in surrounded by flowerbeds, chocolate cake, a football game going on in the background, and hours of chatting among the adults in the living room. Such cozy memories I want to bring into my own home <3

Awesome article. Front porches used to be โ€œThird spacesโ€ as did parlors and game rooms. Iโ€™ve seen a beautiful resurgent of home spaces being used to welcome in community and fellowship within the 20 to 30 something generation. Warms my heart and gives me hope as one who graduated high school the year Taylor was born.

Thanks for tips and ideas!

I think we all long for the parlor or the porch. I know I do! Thank you for reading and leaving this thoughtful comment!

This is such a lovely idea. I fear I'm too much of an introvert and homebody to allow many people into *my* personal space, but I yearn for the kind of welcoming third places that feel like home and don't cost so much to take up space in.

Yes!!! There are also so many ways you can help someone else host without it having to be your space. Homes away from home!!

I think this applies so much to moms of young kids! It's expensive to constantly have to find childcare in order to visit a typical 3rd space. But my mom friend turned her house into one where kids are welcome and it's become a true refuge in every way that you described. Snacks, drinks, music, her signature candle and a toy filled basement for the kids to play while we get to connect. I don't think a business could recreate it!

I love to do this in our garden during the summer!

Ohh I loved this! There is also something called "non-place", coined by Marc Augรฉ. It describes a place of transcience, where we can be anonymous - think airports, shopping malls, night clubs...

I love this! My idea (that I havenโ€™t tried yet) is to leave extra produce and flowers from the garden outside for neighbors or people walking by to take this summer! Hopefully this can help us meet friends and get to know our community more:)
